Keepnook — Support
Keepnook is a notebook app for iPhone and iPad. Your notebooks live on your device; there is no account to sign in to and no server to be down.
Getting help
Email keepnookapp@gmail.com. It is read by a person, not a ticket system, so plain English is fine.
What to put in a message
The more of this you can give, the faster it gets fixed:
- What you did, and what happened instead. "I tapped the pen and drew, and the line stopped at the middle of the page" is worth more than "drawing is broken".
- Whether it happens every time, or happened once.
- Your device and iOS version — Settings → General → About.
- A screenshot, if there is anything to see. Please crop out anything from your notebooks you would rather not send; nothing in a screenshot reaches Keepnook automatically.
If Keepnook crashed and you have crash reports switched on, a diagnostic report was already sent — it describes the fault, not you, and it contains nothing from your notebooks. You can see exactly what it does and does not contain, and turn reports off, under Where your data lives (the profile icon at the top of your shelf). See the privacy policy for the full account.
Backing up your work
Keepnook has no sync and keeps no copy of your notebooks anywhere but your device, so the backup file you export yourself is the only backup there is. Make one before you change devices, and before you delete the app.
- Open Keepnook and tap the profile icon at the top of your shelf.
- Open Where your data lives.
- Tap Export a backup, and save the file somewhere you will find it again.
The file holds everything — every notebook, page, drawing and photo. To bring it back, or to move your work to another device, use Import a file on the same screen. Importing only ever adds: if a notebook in the file is already on the device and has not changed, it is left alone, and if the copy in the file is newer, Keepnook asks you what to do before touching anything.
If a notebook will not open
Nothing has been deleted. When Keepnook cannot make sense of what is saved on the device, it stops rather than guessing, sets the saved copy aside, and pauses editing so nothing can overwrite it. That is the screen you are looking at if it says We couldn't read your saved library.
What to do:
- Do not reinstall the app, and do not delete it. Deleting Keepnook deletes the saved copy along with it, and that copy is what a recovery would be built from.
- If it says the library was saved by a newer version of Keepnook, update the app from the App Store and open it again. That is the whole fix.
- Otherwise, email support and include the short line of detail the screen shows underneath the message. Say what you were doing the last time Keepnook worked, and whether you have an exported backup file.
If a single page looks wrong rather than the whole library — an empty photo frame, or a note saying part of the page came from a newer version of Keepnook — that is Keepnook showing you honestly that something is missing rather than hiding it. Email support with what you see.
What Keepnook does not do
Worth saying plainly, because people ask:
- There is no sync. Two devices with Keepnook on them do not share notebooks. Moving work between them means exporting a backup and importing it.
- There is no account, so there is nothing to log in to and no password to reset.
- Nothing is stored on a server, so there is no copy for us to restore for you if a device is lost. The backup file is the answer to that, and it is the only one.
Privacy
Keepnook's privacy policy explains what leaves your device — a crash report, if you leave them switched on — and what never does.
